Let’s start
and build that talkbox!
First get a good midrange compression driver (that's what's used in PA Horn speakers or voice-amplifiers). Be careful to chose the best frequency range. As an example, the Heil Sound ranges from 800 Hz to 12 KHz and the Golden Throat goes from 400 Hz up to 10 kHz. If you want a "fatter" talkbox sound, get a driver that starts around 150 Hz and doesn't go past 8 or 10 KHz. Then you have a choice between 16 or 8 Ohms drivers. Try to match it to your amp's. Good drivers to choose are old Electro-Voice 1823M's or 1824M's, though sometimes hard to find and pretty expensive, but you can get lucky… You also have the famous PylePro PDS772, which is pretty good and pretty cheap ($43) and the MCM 54-050. Look for partsexpress.com, they have some cheap stuff also.
now make it safe!
In order to protect your driver from unwanted low-frequencies that might damage it, you'll have to add a "crossover" network to your driver. It's generaly just a simple filtering capacitor whose value, defined in µF (microfarad) will depend on a simple calculation based on the impedance in Ohms and the desired cut-off frequency in Hz (check the right-hand column for details). Then you'll need a female jack plug that you'll connect to the + & - plugs on the driver, the capacitor going on +.

hook that up…
Now the trickiest part : find a means to hook your tube to the driver's mouth (drivers' standard thread is 35mm - 1.37 inches?). You can mess up with various garden/water adapters or be creative… Otherwise, order the Heil Sound HT-1’s tube adapter at Jim Dunlop's, it will fit perfectly. Tubing can be found in gardening or fish section of your local hardware store. Best length is about 6.5 ft. For a threading adapter like the Heil's, take 15mm (0.59 inches) outter diameter.

Now some soldering and good will and here's your "custom" talkbox ready to roar… If you don't like all that stuff laying down on the floor, get yourself a box to put all that and make it really "custom"! How to build your own talkbox What U Need
to build your own

The list

1 Midrange horn driver
1 filtering non-polarized capacitor
1 female jack plug
1 pair of speaker cables
1 tube holder (trickiest part)
6.5 ft of clear plastic tube
1 Soldering iron

Optional : a metal box to house your stuff ;-)
Talkboxers
that went “custom”
Teddy Riley
Uses a Golden Throat and custom talkbox

Roger Troutman
Popularized the Golden Throat but has had many custom boxes.

Bigg Robb
Even sells his “Robb Boxx” custom.

Maltax
The guy has many talkboxes.
But also : MrGroove, Funkmaster Ozone, O-Dawg, B-Zapp, Sin2, ManMan…
The drivers
Good ones to chose from
Monacor KU-516
Pyle Pro PDS 772
Selenium D250-X
MCM 54-050

Vintage drivers
The reference…
Electro-Voice 1823M
Electro-Voice 1824M
(Used in Golden Throat series.)

The capacitor
how to calcutate
C = 112500 / (Z x Fc)

With :
C = Capacitor's value, in µF
Z = driver's impedance, in ohms
Fc = Cut-off frequency (usually the lowest frequency the driver can handle)

Tube holder
can be ordered at

(The thread is a standard 35mm on all drivers.)
