I Play The Talkbox

What you need to play the talkbox…

First and foremost… a talkbox, of course ! Chose the model that fits your needs and/or budget. There are many on the market but also ways to build your own custom talkbox.
Next, an amplifier. Some talkboxes (actually two) like the Electro Harmonix “Golden Throat Deluxe” and Rocktron “Banshee” are self-amplified but all others definitely need an amp. Preferably an amp head but there are other options, as we’ll see further on.
A decent dynamic mic, like stage mics, will do fine to record your talkbox. These mics can handle extreme sound pressures without too much hassle and, being less sensitive than condenser mics, they won’t grab your mom’s dish-washer and lil’ sis playing in her room. Only your talkbox…
Last but not least, a good, yet simple, synthesizer that’s able to generate sawtooth-based leads and play mono. This means a lot of keyboards! Talkboxers out there cherish the Yamaha DX100 because of it’s size, ergonomy and fame (Roger Troutman used it) but other keyboards will do fine, like analog modeling synths, for instance.
